To tell the story Tsuruma is to tell the story of Shōwa-Ku, its relationships to surrounding villages, and the people within them.
Tsuruma was once part of the Gokiso Village, one of six villages that would become Shōwa-Ku. The name Tsuruma when translated originallymeant” a place where water always flows”. The village had many of ponds, rivers that irrigated rice fields that covered much of the landscape, becauseof this it was continually plagued by flooding.
The city of Nagoya’s development gave rise to the birth of Tsuruma Park. It was the symbol of the city and a space of civic discourse, to protest, to play, and for citizens to find solidarity. It also had its dark times with memories of war and riots.
The memories of Tsuruma are like the waters that once flowed through it. Connecting and separating, constantly flowing, these memories have
helped define it; they allow us to reflect on the past and shape the future.
Artist Marlon Griffith in collaboration with the Tsuruma community comes together in a procession to reflect and celebrate the community. Weaving together these multi-layered memories in a procession, a moving display of a collective remembering that TSURUMA is a place WHERE WATERFLOWS.

鶴舞の物語を語るということは、昭和区やその周囲の集落との関係、そしてそこに暮らす人々の物語を語るということです。
昭和区は６つの村が集まって成り立った区です。鶴舞は、その６つの村のうちの一つである御器所村の一部でした。
鶴舞という地名はもともとツルマとカタカナで書かれており、「いつも水が流れる間」という意味でした。村は多くの池や川、田んぼで埋め尽くされ、絶えず洪水に悩まされてもいました。
名古屋市の発展により、鶴舞公園が誕生しました。それは市のシンボルでもあり、市民の議論の場であり、抗議したり、遊んだりと、市民が様々な形で団結する場所でした。戦争や暴動の記憶が残る暗い時代もありました。
鶴舞の思い出は、かつてそこを流れていた水のようなもの。つながったり、離れたりしながらも、絶えず流れる続ける記憶は、私たちが過去を振り返り、未来を形作ることを可能にします。
2023年11月、現代美術家マーロン・グリフィスは地域の住民と協力し、鶴舞の重層的な記憶を織り込み、鶴舞がかつて水の流れる場所だった記憶をたどるパレードを生み出しました。
